The Board of Trustees decided to no longer offer anthropology as a major or minor at Mesa State College. Anthropology classes will still be offered to students, but now they cannot declare it as a concentration. Due to the cutbacks, one of the two department professors, Clare Boulanger, will be let go May of next year. She’s taught at Mesa State since 1993.
Mesa State says the elimination wasn’t budget driven. They say it’s just part of their prioritizing students’ needs. “As Mesa State continues to add new programs, the question arises, does anything go away and that’s what promoted the evaluation,” Dana Nunn, Mesa State spokeswoman.
“No one receives news like this happily. I’m upset,” says Clare Boulanger, Mesa State Anthropology Professor. Mesa State officials say changes could be in store for other departments. Eight students have graduated from the anthropology program in the past six years.
