Monday morning, Mesa County Commissioners formally accepted a $1 million grant from the state to help fund a new public works facility. The money will help pay for about a quarter of the new building, which is expected to cost about $4 million dollars to build. The grant was provided by the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA).
The grant was initially awarded last December, but the county had to formally approve the contract that comes with the funds. Tom Fisher, the Regional Services Director for Mesa County, says they were fortunate to get the grant at a time when the state is facing steep budget cuts.
The public works department of Mesa County is primarily responsible for the upkeep of county roads. Officials say the new 26,000 square foot building will consolidate their offices and allow them to operate more efficiently.
The new building is already under construction near the Mesa County landfill, and is expected to be completed by the end of next year. It will be located next to the new Animal Services Building, also being constructed on the same site.
