Grand Junction, Colo.

A joint rescue effort recovered a man stranded on a Colorado River island around 4:30 Friday afternoon. Police say 39-year-old William Spencer was attempting to cross the river in an improper raft to reach an island he lives on. He was swept downriver and became stranded on an island west of the 5th Street bridge near downtown Grand Junction.

Spencer was rescued by boat and was brought back to shore at Connected Lakes. Police initially thought there were two more people on the raft at the time it deflated, but they were later accounted for.
