The driver charged in connection with a fatal rollover crash on I-70 says he’s going to fight the charges. Richard Carlson of Rifle made his first appearance at Mesa County traffic court Friday morning. Carlson is facing charges of careless driving causing death and two counts of careless driving causing bodily injury.

Last month, Carlson was driving his Subaru along I-70 in De Beque Canyon when he rear-ended a Ford Focus passing a broken down semi, causing the Focus to roll over. One of the passengers in the Focus, Jose Aragon of Grand Junction, was killed after being ejected.

Carlson denied a request for an on-camera interview, but told News Channel 5 off camera that he’s having a difficult time dealing with the accident. But Carlson hopes he is able to clear his name, saying the driver of the Focus is to blame for the accident for pulling out in front of him.

Carlson was the second person charged in the accident. The driver of the broken down semi truck, Tinauris Wise of Illinois, is facing counts of negligent homicide and reckless endangerment after being accused of improperly placing emergency markers behind his truck. Wise is currently out on bond while he awaits trial.
