This past Thursday, Glenwood Springs traveled to Palisade for a game; less than 24 hours later, the Palisade athletic director got a call from Glenwood High School saying a large portion of their team was out sick. Palisade’s athletic director sent home to all the parents on the volleyball team with the latest information he had heard from Glenwood, as well listed in the letter are the symptoms and prevention tips for swine flu. He says assumptions set aside, this was more about precautions.
He met with the girls on the team to give them the heads up. Any equipment that was left out in the gym from the night before was disinfected, including the locker rooms. The Glenwood Springs athletic director says no other teams have been hit as hard with illnesses like their volleyball team.
“We had a number of girls feel sick Friday, after Thursday’s contest. So, we thought it just to be safe we should notify Palisade of the amount of girls sick and one of our coaches had tested positive for H1N1,” says Glenwood Springs Athletic Director Craig Denney.
“We don’t have anything that we can directly correlate to Thursday night’s game. We had a couple of girls that weren’t feeling well, so as a precaution we told them to stay home. None of our players stayed home from our games this weekend,” says Palisade’s Athletic Director, Mike Krueger.
Palisade’s athletic director says so far, so good; no abnormally high absent numbers from their volleyball team, but they did take off Monday from practice just to be safe. Glenwood Springs High School did cancel a volleyball game this past Saturday because a large number of players weren’t feeling well.
Garfield County Health Department says they’ve had three confirmed cases of swine flu in the past month. Two of those cases required hospitalization.
