We’re traveling back to the Wild West as a group of local cowboys called the Thunder Mountain Shootists take aim in one of the fastest growing shooting sports in the world.  These cowboys and cowgirls have been gathering in Whitewater since 1998 as part of the Single Action Shooting Society.  43 members dress the part and have shooting matches on the range.  The scoring is baised on speed, accuracy and their ability to follow orders.  Each cowboy is equipped with four guns including two pistons, a rifle and a shotgun.  They use real ammo, but safety is a big priority.

“When you put on the duds and you strap on the guns, it really almost takes you back,” said Thunder Mountain Shootist, Spur Cross Kid.

The cowboys say they enjoy the activity and the comradery with fellow players.

“Cowboys are kind of a special breed.  There just isn’t anything that anyone wouldn’t do for eachother,” said cowgirl, Purdy Pearl.

The group can also compete at a higher level in the senior games competition, rounding up shooters from around the country.  You can find out more about the Thunder Mountain Shootist in the March edition of the Grand Valley Magazine coming out on March 1st.  For more information on how you can subscribe or where you can buy a copy visit, grandvalleymagazine.com.
