Grand Junction High School’s baseball team rallied from a 2-run 7th inning deficit on Tuesday night to shock rival Fruita Monument, 6-4.
The defending Southwestern League Champion Tigers took advantage of three Wildcat errors to plate four-runs in their final at bat. Trailing 4-3 with two outs and two on, Aaron Berk hit a soft grounder to shortstop but a high throw to first base allowed the tying run to cross the plate and kept the game alive.
Later in the inning, Fruita fell apart on the defensive side. A passed ball allowed the go ahead run to score and then an errant throw to third base on the same play gave the Tigers an insurance run.
The Wildcats made things interesting in the bottom of the 7th inning. Fruita had the winning run at 1st base with the bases loaded but Geoff Baldwin slammed the door shut by striking out Drew Bridges to end the game.
The Tigers (9-0, 3-0 SWL) will play conifer on Thursday morning at 10:00 am at Canyon View Park.
The Wildcats have no time to rest. They’ll face Conifer at 2:00 pm on Wednesday afternoon.
The Montrose Indians won a sloppy game on Tuesday afternoon against the Central Warriors, 11-7.
The Indians, who opened RMAC play with two straight losses, survived a five-error performance by taking advantage of seven Central errors.
Central will play Conifer at 4:30 pm on Canyon View Park.
