The first blast of winter has arrived in parts of Western Colorado. Snow started falling late Tuesday morning along the Grand Mesa, making travel a bit tricky. A steady light snow combined with gusty winds made things feel more like December than late October.
Snow plows and salt trucks are already out across parts of our area. CDOT officials say they, along with their 30 trucks in Mesa Garfield and Delta counties, are prepared for the storm that could bring over a half foot of snow in the high country.
Weldon Allen, the Regional Transportation Director for CDOT, says they are fully stocked with a sand/salt combination as well as a deicing solution to prevent roads from icing over. Most of the focus will be in the high country, where some places could see over 6 inches of snow in the next day or two, but officials say they’ll be monitoring the valleys, where some light snows are possible once a cold front pushes through Tuesday night.
Officials say if you plan on traveling through the mountains over the next couple of days to be prepared for a slow go of it. They also say if you must travel to be prepared, including having your chains, warm clothing, some food and water in case you were to become stranded in the wintry weather.
