39-year-old Brent Ingram was shot and killed by Grand Junction police officers Sunday afternoon at the Timbers Motel on North Avenue. Mrs. Ingram says her husband of 18 years was upset because he couldn’t find a job. He was at the motel drinking. Ingram says she never felt in danger. When police showed up, she said she was up front with them, and told them he had a pocket knife on him.

Now, they say they’re without a husband, dad, and any kind of answers.

“He didn’t deserve to die like this,” says Nancy Ingram as she wipes her tears.

Ingram and her 13-year-old son, Trent, say they don’t get it. “The cops were called to help my husband, not to kill him.” Ingram’s wife admits the husband called the cops because her husband was drinking, and the business didn’t want any trouble.

Trent talked with his dad minutes before the incident happened. “He told me that he had warrants for his arrest. I didn’t want to see him get arrested, so I hugged him, told him I loved him and left.”

The 8th grader went for a walk, his mom stuck around the hotel. “I heard the officers say ‘Drop it, drop it,’ then I heard screaming, never from him, and then gunshots.”

Trent heard the shots, too, and ran back. “I saw the white sheet over him and knew he was dead.”

The Grand Junction Police Chief says he understands the family and community’s concerns. “Any time we can avoid using deadly force, believe me, we will. Every officer would love to go through their entire career without having to do so,” says Chief John Camper.

Mrs. Ingram says she has questions about what happened after her husband was shot. “I don’t understand why they moved the body and took my husband’s clothes off.”

She says their entire situation that Sunday afternoon could’ve been handled differently.

The Grand Junction Police Department isn’t releasing specifics regarding the investigation. Chief Camper will confirm that officers did not strip Ingram at the scene. Ingram also has another son besides Trent, Zane, who’s 10 years old.

The family has set up a fund. Contributions will be accepted at any American National Bank.

If someone is not going to cooperate with the police when they are directed too, then by all means, they are a menace to the police and other around them and should be dealt with as such.  Even if the police are in the wrong right then and there, you should cooperate fully and get it sorted out later.  It is pure stupidity to fight with the cops and even a small knife can be deadly.  If he had the knife in his hand, then IMO it was a justifiable shooting and we should be concerned with the cops well being.  They put their lives on the line to protect and serve our community and almost all of them do their job very well.  I can only think of one Officer on the GJPD that I have ever dealt with that was anything but very professional and their to protect our community, and unfortunately a job I used to have put me in contact with many of our cities finest.  Besides, bringing a knife to a gun fight is pretty damn stupid and Darwin is correct in the survival of the fittest.

Its clear NunYA that you did not read my comment well. Im on the side of the wife and children. This could have gone down a better way and the man would still be alive. Now next time read things better before you jump on me.

nashobamakni If you know to a certainity that the wife and kids are liers then OK. If you do not know to a certainity then you are being rude to this family during their time of loss. I suspect the second. As for the police officers this could have been handled differently and just because the Police Chief states no wrongdoing by the officers does not make it so. He and everyone involved will protect themselves and the city from a lawsuit. An independent investagation needs done. Hard to fathom that two officers wearing body armour could not take down a drunk without killing him. They could also have backed out of the room and called for backup and let the situation cool off.

Ok jacob. Tit for tat..Taser Gun gee. And still the man was drunk and had a small knife which can be taken away very quickly by other means. So it still remains that there were other ways to take him down and he would still be alive. Get over it. Police are supposed to be trained to handle all situations and its clear they did not handle this one the right way. Sounds to me that you have a very big problem with the media so maybe you should turn off your TV and do not read the news papers. Oh and just for your info I was in law enforecement and I know how this could have played out better.

Oh please know what entails a knife fight before saying, “The electric gun”, know what your even talking about when you refer to Tasers, “electric gun” idiots. Know what a 21 foot rule is that is known world wide, know reactionary times, know what the facts of the incident are before passing judgement, know that the media lies profoundly to make stories. How about you stand 10 feet away from me and without any warning I will charge after you with a large kitchen knife and start stabbing you and see what you do and how long it takes you to do something you so perfect arm chair quarterbacks. I agree if the facts show the cops were wrong, charge them but if not you should do society a favor liberal morons, go drive off the monument!

Oh please Jacob. This could have been handled in a better way. It does not make any difference who said she said or they said. The fact is this incident could have been resolved with the electric gun. No ifs ands or buts about it.

The Chief of Police said it was proper force. Not so.
There are other means that could have been used,Baton, mace or pepper spray, and the electric gun.
This person should still be alive but these officers did not think before reacting. They should be fired and charged with manslaughter and then the dpartment should be accountable in civil court.

The wife and kid are liers…..the media shouldn’t print or televise incorrect facts just to make a story against the Police that you so adamantly hate. Get the facts right before you judge the Police, but then again who would expect anything less than false information from the media. Funny isn’t how the results of the investigation ahven’t been released but you tell her story like its gospel. I hope the cops file a lawsuit against the media for falsely printing things about them. And oh yeah you can be sued, don’t think you can’t, its called liable.
