Grand Junction, Colo.

After failing to persuade lawmakers to slow down disputed new rules governing Western Slope energy exploration, the Grand Junction Chamber made a long, disappointing trip home last week.

But, the chamber should feel good about its effort, and we hope it will continue to provide a forum in which our business community can offer influence.  Through the chamber, our voice becomes increasingly difficult for legislators and the governor to ignore, not only on energy but also other issues affecting Grand Junction.

It also has an added benefit of generating more local participation in the process of governing our state, so we hope that the chamber will continue to engage its members and civic leaders in a robust conversation.

Responses to challenges affecting us must originate with or include us, and not be left only to those working 250 miles to the east, regardless of how smart or well-intentioned they may be.
