Grand Junction, Colo.
Law Enforcement sets up a checkpoint to catch St. Patrick’s Day DUI drivers on Highway 6 and 50. Three drivers were arrested for DUI and six were cited for not having a licence, according to Sgt. Dean Garcia of the CSP.
Within 15 minutes of setting up the checkpoint, a DUI driver was arrested. According to authorities at the scene he was a 25-year-old resident of Delta.
MADD volunteer Lisa Maynard was at the scene to help law enforcement by providing food and drinks for them as they carried out the checkpoint.
She says it’s important to her to volunteer with MADD because her sister was killed by a drunk driver. “He was driving with a blood alcohol level of .16,” said Maynard.
Drivers didn’t seem to mind being stopped and questioned. “I don’t mind,” said Jane Foster, of Grand Junction, “If it gets someone who is driving drunk off the streets, then it’s a good thing.”
The checkpoint was organized by the Colorado State Patrol, and they were assisted by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and the Grand Junction Police Department.
