Loma, Colo.
Colorado State Patrol is investigating an accident that caused Highway 139 to shut down for 12 hours and a propane truck to go up in flames.
It happened around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night around in Garfield County just north of Loma. Lower Valley Fire District officials said the driver of the propane truck lost control and hit an oncoming pickup truck.
Authorities said the crash caused a rip in the tanker, and a short time later, the semi truck caught on fire from a spark in the road. Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Lower Valley Fire District, and hazmat crews were at the scene. Hazmat crews decided to let the 30 foot high fire burn out because of the dangerous amount of propane.
The road was shut down until 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. Officials said the two drivers and the passenger in the pickup truck were not injured in the accident. According to the Colorado State Patrol, both drivers were cited. The cause of the crash has not been determined, but speed is being investigated as a factor.
