Mesa County’s preparations for a local swine flu outbreak are taking form, as Colorado’s first confirmed swine flu cases are announced. On Thursday, the marching orders for local doctors, nurses, and healthcare officials were made public. Minutes before a scheduled press conference, the mood changed at the health department.
The State Health Director called, confirming what many had predicted; Colorado is no longer swine flu-free. Local health officials unveiled their Emergency Operations Center.
Dr. Michael Aduddell, with the Mesa County Health Department, said, “At first I was just concerned it was someone in Mesa County.” Jeff Kirtland, with School District 51, said “We wouldn’t make a school closing unless there was a confirmed case, and the Health Department would make that call through the CDC.”
There’s still no confirmed cases in Mesa County, but we’ve learned that one local culture was sent away for testing. Health officials told News Channel 5 Thursday that the test came back negative. For more information about swine flu, you can call 248-6989.
