A Colorado lawmaker is warning that state colleges and universities could face spending cuts next year because of declining tax collections. Senator Moe Keller of Wheat Ridge says the state could have between $150 million and $300 million less than expected.
She says Colorado sales tax collections for last month were $77 million below projections and that economists believe income taxes still being collected could be up to $80 million less than expected.
Keller says that could mean “brutal” cuts in spending for higher education, as well as prisons and kindergarten through 12th grade schools.
