Just this year 158 children have been abused or neglected in Mesa County. Thursday, Oprah profiled the life of a 10-year-old girl, Danielle, and the horrific life she was forced to call her home life. She was taken to the emergency room immediately after police rescued her from her home. Although, child abuse isn’t only a nationwide problem but also a problem that hits home here in the Grand Valley.
Investigators say a 2006 child abuse case off Brownie Circle in Clifton is one of the worst they’ve seen. A father and his girlfriend were arrested. Authorities say the couple handcuffed a teen boy, beat him, and denied him bathroom privileges.
Mesa County Sherrif’s Sgt. Henry Stoffel wasn’t an investigator on this case, but described to us the worst he’s seen. “Sometimes there’s been multiple animals that have deficated on the floors and not cleaned up. Children do not have clean clothes or beds to sleep in.”
“We see children living in conditions and environments that no child should have to endure,” says Karen Martsolf, with Mesa County Human Resources. Martsolf says this life is many times the only life children have come to know. “Children living in these situations are, if they do know better--they are aware of the situation--many times, they are terrified to report it.”
Authorities say when they go to investigate a child abuse call, the children who have become victims in their own homes are grasping for their protection. “When we arrive, the children see us, and are clinging to us because they see protection.”
The young girl, Danielle, who was profiled on Oprah survived and now lives with her adoptive parents. Mesa County Human Resources tells us the teen boy and his sister who lived off Brownie Circle now live in a safer environment and are doing better.

How many of these cases came from homes where drug and or alcohol abuse is present? There has to be another reason for the abuse to happen in the first place.

Please people, if you cannot care for your children, it is not a bad thing to consider adopting them out.
