Mesa County, Colo.
The votes are in, and Colorado caucuses are showing some surprising results. Voters from both parties weighed in Tuesday night on their choices of candidates for this fall’s election, rejecting insider projections.
With most precincts reporting, Democratic U.S. Senator Michael Bennet was handily defeated by challenger Andrew Romanoff, who picked up 50% of the vote. However, Mesa County Democrats overwhelmingly supported Senator Bennet with 64% of the vote.
DEMOCRAT CAUCUS RESULTS: U.S. SENATE
Andrew Romanoff 50% (11,268 votes)
Senator Michael Bennet 41% (9,221 votes)

Senator Michael Bennet 64% (312 votes)
Meanwhile, it’s a photo finish on the Republican side for Senate. Both former Lieutenant Governor Jane Norton and Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck picked up 38% of the vote, with Buck showing a slight lead over Norton of 150 votes. In Mesa County, Norton was the clear favorite over Buck, winning 64% of the vote, compared to just 17% for Buck.

On the GOP ticket for Governor, Scott McInnis won easily over challenger Dan Maes, 59% to 40%. McInnis also won here in Mesa County with 77% of the vote.

Just about 50,000 Coloradans participated in Tuesday night’s caucuses. Here in Mesa County, about 1,500 turned out. That number is down slightly from 2008, which was a presidential year. The caucuses are the first step for party nominations in Colorado; the nominees won’t be picked until August 10th primaries.
