News Channel 5 has confirmed inmate Octavio Vargas-Herrera is the inmate that committed suicide in the Mesa County Jail. Vargas-Herrera was being held on first degree murder charges and on a federal immigration hold. Vargas-Herrera is accused of the stabbing death of his wife Jeana back in March.
According to Mesa County Sheriff’s officials, a detention deputy discovered Vargas-Herrera at 11:54 Thursday night hanging in his cell. The deputy attempted CPR and the Grand Junction Fire Department responded.
Sheriff’s officials say they had just done their rounds and checked on Vargas-Herrera 27 minutes before he was found dead in his cell. They say surveillance footage and electronic logging backs that claim up.
Grand Junction fire and rescue crews were called to the jail, along with several other deputies. When they arrived, the inmate was unconscious and not breathing.
The Sheriff’s Office tells us they will be launching an internal investigation into the death of Vargas-Herrera.
Sheriff Stan Hilkey tells News Channel 5 the preliminary investigation shows the Mesa County Detention deputies followed polices and procedures properly. He says Vargas-Herrera hanged himself with a bed sheet.
Since 1992, there have been six suicides.

Is it wrong to not shed a tear? This animal stabbed his wife 27 times… So, yes… I am just a bit short on sympathy (save a prayer for the victims family)...although somewhat grateful for his decision to decrease the surplus population… adios!
