An arrest has been made in Wednesday’s dog dragging death on the Colorado National Monument. Tips from the public led National Park Service rangers to arrest 37-year-old Steven Romero of Grand Junction Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say Romero took the stolen dog from Delta to the Colorado National Monument early Wednesday morning. He then attached the German Shepherd mix to his truck and dragged the dog, with a rope around its neck, for two miles up Rim Rock Drive. Park Rangers say the dog died of strangulation before Romero dumped on the side of the road. He is charged with felony aggravated cruelty to animals.

Three years for this horrible crime is nothing the next thing he drags to death will probably be human as these types of people start with animals and then move up the line. At least he has been captured so he should not be free to repeat this crime. I agree with many of the previous comments that like punishment would be very fair.

Three years is nothing. He stole a dog only to drag it to death. His next action will be to drag a person to death. I say give him a taste of his action. The courts never give a stiff enough sentence for animal abuse. This man is cruel and deserves a very stiff sentence.

It makes me sick that this poor excuse for a man could steal a dog only to kill it by such an inhumane act.  Dogs are man’s best friend, they trust us to take care of them and love us even when we don’t deserve it.  I, too, think he needs to be drug behind a truck for two miles-don’t waste taxpayer money-he doesn’t deserve it. How one treats animals is indicitive of how one treats people.  I can’t find any compassion and please don’t tell me he was treated poorly when growing up.

they should do the same to him.god for gives but we don’t have too.Prison cost us all I think we should go back to the old ways, flogging hanging ect!But since we cant, 3 years may not be long enough. If he can do that to a dog, what will that lead to ? Get him off the streets so he can do no more harm.

We must make SURE that he gets the maximum allowed sentence; no plea bargening!  People that can do this kind of cruelty deserve more that the 3 year sentence.  We should set an example by NOT allowing him to get off with less. Personally, I would like to drag him behind my truck, just as he did that poor dog who didn’t understand what was happening to him; he only knew pain.  I can’t imagine how that poor family who had this dog stolen slept last night. I know we went to sleep thinking of this incident with saddened and angry hearts.

I totally agree with bschanz that Romero, an archaic person, should be tied to a pickup and drug for two miles.  Our judicial being what it is, that won’t happen.
How stupid is it to sentence him to only three years and fine him a ridiculous amount of money.  Look at the man,  he doesn’t have money and obviously not the brains to keep a job for any amount of time.

Go ahead and sentence him to three years (I don’t want to pay for him in prison any longer than that) and have him mail the family a FIVE DOLLAR BILL a day (a pack of cigarettes or a 6 pack of cheap beer) for ten years.  That way he has to think about what he did for a long time.

Years ago I heard of a man that had raped and killed a woman.  He had to send her family a dollar a day for many years while he was in prison.  Interviewed he said it was the worse part of his sentence.

The punishment is not nearly enough.  Anyone who can do that to an animal deserves to be locked up for more than 3 years.  Thank goodness for the people who helped authorities catch this guy!!

The punishment that this idiot is going to get is not deservant enough,I feel that this yahoo should see how long he can run behind a truck with a rope around his neck.
