Less than a month after being put up, a billboard spouting the message “Keep Religion OUT of Government” on North Avenue was defaced with a hateful message.

“We have over 50 billboards across the country, and this is the first one to be defaced,” Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-President of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, said.

Sometime over the weekend, the word “religion” was crossed out with black spray paint and replaced with a homophobic slur. The billboard can be seen by drivers headed west on North Avenue in between 29-1/2 and 29 Roads.

The foundation, based in Madison, Wisconsin, is in talks with the billboard company to get the sign replaced as soon as possible. There are no suspects yet in the case.
